Inside And Out At Expo '92

The New York Times | Jueves, 01 de Enero de 1970, 00:00:00

TO walk in the Saudi Arabian Pavilion at the Seville 1992 Universal Exposition, which opens on Monday, "is to be indoors and outdoors simultaneously," said James Wines, a principal in SITE, a Manhattan concern that designed the the pavilion. Fitch RS, a London design firm, created the interior.

According to its organizers, Expo '92 is a Columbian exposition, celebrating the theme of discovery; 120 countries are participating. The Saudi pavilion is a typical SITE design, with an exterior that appears to be half-constructed, so that the interiors are laid somewhat bare. "We wanted to confirm people's perceptions of what Saudi Arabia is, and then alter them," said Martyn Best, project director for Fitch RS. Within the 25,000 square-foot pavilion is a terrarium wall, which holds pre-Islam objects like pots, jewelry and burial stones. Elsewhere, a hologram shows a page from the Koran. The last gallery focuses on how Saudi Arabia is exploring the greening of the desert and the stabilization of sand dunes.
